Development Opportunities, open to everyone aged from 14-99:
> Armoury workshop – We are lucky to have Andrew Goodier back to run the day for us. If you have met Andy, you will know how good he is as an armourer and at sharing his knowledge. He is one of our Master Armourers, has been part of the team at two Olympics and has lots of side stories to share.
The first part will be very general. But will move on to cover whatever equipment you care to bring along to investigate.
So, if you just want an introduction you can do the morning – with or without the HEMA in the afternoon.
For those with some experience, or those just happy to stick with it, Andy is planning to carry on all day. Please bring your weapons, and your club equipment, along to work on
> Referee workshop – We are lucky to have Luke Deamer to run the day for us. If you have met Luke, you will know how good he is as a referee and at sharing his knowledge. Luke is one of our FIE (international) referees, and an established educator and examiner. There will be an opportunity to do the L1 written exam, but the practical will have to be done on another occasion. Places are limited and going fast.
Fencers
> morning: fencers – footwork & fitness
> afternoon: A chance to try HEMA – Historical European Martial Arts is a linked sport. If you would like to have a go, your fencing experience will be broadened. SFR Fencing coach Alan Knowles will be heading this up with some colleagues from the association. This is appearing at fencing clubs around the country so we thought you might like a fun afternoon to see what it is about. Fencing kit is ideal to wear, if you have none let us know the week before – we will arrange some for you to borrow. Non fencers also welcome to join this.

Check-In Times
Check-in times will be published closer to the competition date. We expect this to be a popular competition, so fencers may need to stay through much of the day.
Southern Region – Fencers may only enter this Regional event if they have specified Southern Region on their British Fencing Membership. Fencers may only fence in a qualifying event in one region in any season.
UK residents – As these are the qualifying events for the British Youth Championships (BYCs), fencers must be UK residents.
BYC qualification and entry fee – At least the top four fencers in each competition will qualify for the BYCs. More will qualify in any competitions with 17 or more fencers. All qualifying fencers will be asked to pay the £21 BYC entry fee at the competition on 25 January
Byes – For 2016, all fencers with a bye for the BYC and who want to take advantage of the bye will need to enter this competition.
They do not need to fence but they are required to pay the competition entry fee – please notify entries@southernfencing.org.uk if you enter but are not fencing.
Fencers with byes will be an additional qualifier on top of the regions quota no matter where they finish. All fencers with bye’s will be contacted by British Fencing explaining this too.
Cancellation/Refund Policy – In general no refunds or cancellations will be given once a fencer has paid the entry fee. Refunds are only given in unusual/extreme circumstances and at the discretion of the Region chair. Any fencer who receives a refund is deemed not to have entered the qualifier and cannot be entered in the BYC even if they have a bye.

What is the Southern Fencing Club?
Training format:
This is a fencing club, with fencing at the heart of the activities. The general aim is to replicate a whole competition in just 3 hours. Thus everyone does 5 fights to 5 hits, 3 minutes and then 3 or 4 fights to 15, 3 * 3 minutes. Fencers are to be self-presiding and agree on scoring of hits.
This is a training session where fencers are expected experiment and learn during the course of a bout. Fencers are not to be aggressive or intimidating. Less able fencers are to be respected and given help to develop, grow and learn.
Restrictions:
Requirements:
Please bring a box from your normal club if possible. We will need around 5 boxes to be provided by attendees.
Costs:
£7.50 per session, payable on the day
Reductions – £5.00 per session, payable on the day (Students, Amateur / Professional coaches, Southern Region or National organisers, Veteran or retired fencers, etc.)

We hope that this day will help to ensure that more families will get involved with their fencer’s progress and the region that they belong to. To understand why things are the way they are and what they might consider doing to help support/improve what is currently happening.
Generous discounts being offered to all those who put ‘Southern’ down on their BFA membership and their families, and we hope you will continue to show your support by doing so in the future.
Please can you encourage your friends and their families to come along to the Development Day.
We will, as usual, provide lunch. Again, this year, our AGM will take place over lunch. This year I will be stepping down, as will Cara (our treasurer) and Eileen (our competitions secretary). June is prepared to continue on the committee and I do hope you will all get behind her and support her. We do need new blood on the main committee. We now have a lot of people supporting the committee like the competitions committee, coaching support, and our contacts for safeguarding, SF clothing and SF kit as well as many of you who turn up at competitions and help out on the day. I have been in this role for six years and, whilst we have come a very long way, new leadership/new ideas are needed for the region to continue to thrive. I want to say a huge thank you to all of you for your support over the years and trust you will continue to work together to keep the region alive and very well. I have been asked to become an England Executive Director to work with regions; you have helped to get the experience for me to be offered this role.
Please feel free to ask me or any of the committee about the work involved and consider what you might be able to do.

Our fourth Coach’s Day takes place on Saturday, 9th July
We are returning to the welcoming – Park House School in Newbury
This day is only for coaches and is, this year, geared to coaches both new and experienced.
This is an opportunity for new and experienced coaches to share knowledge, tips, best practice and general hints on how to get the best out of your fencers.
He is going to hold two sessions for us;
An innovative look at athlete centred development from entry level to performance programme. You will understand the principles of LTAD and be able to instantly apply what you learn to your athletes. We will predominantly be looking at Windows of Trainability, Periodisation and the importance of the training diary.
Correct warm ups will enhance athletic performance. This session will expel any misconceptions and give you the creative tools to ensure warm ups are fun and always completed properly. Furthermore, the importance of the cool down will be reviewed. This is a practical session. (come dressed appropriately)
Please bring lunch along – over lunch will be a discussion about regional group training/coaching
Please email coacheducation@southernfencing.org.uk to register your attendance
